THE UPS STORE AT SIGNAL HILL SHOPPING CENTER, 9532 LIBERIA AVENUE, MANASSAS, VA HELPS PROTECT LOCAL CONSUMERS FROM ID THEFT
The UPS Store Provides Convenient Document Shredding
MANASSAS, VA 11/07/2011 — In addition to other services, including mailboxes and packing and shipping, The UPS Store ® located at SIGNAL HILL SHOPPING CENTER, 9532 LIBERIA AVENUE, MANASSAS, VA, along with select The UPS Store locations across the U.S., now offers customers in-store shredding services to further promote identity protection.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that nearly 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year, and rummaging through trash is one of the common ways identity thieves victimize consumers.
The UPS Store encourages customers to shred documents containing personal information to protect themselves against identity theft and fraud. To help customers do this, The UPS Store at Signal Hill Shopping Center, 9532 Liberia Avenue, Manassas, VA, offers its customers the ability to dispose of documents containing personal information using its convenient shredding services.
“Securely destroying documents is a critical step in preventing identity theft,” said The UPS Store franchisee Hiram Andrades. “Recognizing that there is a need for this type of service, we added a secure shredding container at our location. Customers can drop their sensitive documents into the container and our secured shredding service provider Iron Mountain will pick up these documents and shred them at its secure shredding facility or in our parking lot using one of its patented mobile shredding trucks.”
The FTC encourages consumers to shred charge receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks and bank statements, expired charge cards that you're discarding, and credit offers you get in the mail.
For additional information on consumer protection against identity theft and fraud, visit www.ftc.gov.

USAA BANK AND 1,900 THE UPS STORE LOCATIONS OFFER FREE, CONVENIENT “EASY DEPOSIT”
The first bank to apply a personal touch to remote deposit capture through retailers
SAN ANTONIO, June 15, 2011 – USAA Federal Savings Bank customers nationwide now can enjoy the convenience of depositing checks through USAA Easy Deposit at more than 1,900 pre-identified The UPS Store® locations near their home or work. Since offering the free service in select markets last fall, nearly 130,000 checks totaling close to $193 million were forwarded from The UPS Store locations for deposit by USAA members.
USAA Federal Savings Bank is the first financial institution to offer remote deposit capture in retail outlets. USAA Easy Deposit, which uses the same technology that enables check deposits from a smartphone, is the latest banking solution to make life simpler for USAA members. In 2006, USAA launched its Deposit@Home® service, which enables qualified bank members to deposit checks by scanning and submitting them to usaa.com from a home computer.
USAA Bank expanded this capability by launching USAA Deposit@Mobile® in August 2009. Since then, nearly 6.1 million checks totaling more than $3.5 billion have been forwarded for deposit by qualified USAA members from mobile devices.
“Our members are highly mobile; that’s why we strive to stay at the forefront of making banking services accessible and convenient from anywhere,” said David Bohne, president of USAA Federal Savings Bank. “With this new agreement, members can visit any of the pre-identified The UPS Store locations to deposit a check in seconds. USAA Easy Deposit is one of the many ways we make it easy for our members to bank with us.”
“Our franchisees are pleased to be part of a solution that helps USAA customers do their banking,” said Stuart Mathis, president of Mail Boxes Etc. Inc. (MBE), franchisor of The UPS Store brand. “USAA Easy Deposit is a great example of how business organizations can make their customers’ lives easier by maximizing technology and tapping into our nationwide network of convenient The UPS Store locations.”
Here’s how the safe process works: USAA members with a USAA checking account or savings account provide their USAA ATM or debit cards to The UPS Store associate, who swipes the card, selects the type of account and scans the check through remote deposit capture. USAA systems receive the forwarded check information and process the deposit. The UPS Store associate receives confirmation and returns the voided check to the USAA member. After USAA Bank receives the check from The UPS Store, the deposit, in most cases, is immediate and can be verified through account alerts, usaa.com, usaa.mobile or by calling USAA. It’s that simple and safe. Members do not need their account number, PIN or a deposit slip. To help make the process secure, personal information is not required or shared with non-USAA personnel. The entire process takes less than a minute.
USAA members can find the locations offering the service by visiting usaa.com or accessing an application on their Android™ or iPhone® mobile device. To learn more, view this video.

iMEMORIES AND THE UPS STORE HELP PRESERVE HOME VIDEOS, FAMILY PHOTOS Two Companies Service Growing Market for Personal Media Digital Preservation
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 9, 2011 – iMemories, a web destination for digitizing, storing and sharing personal videos and photos, today announced an agreement with The UPS Store ® retail network. Customers now have a convenient way to pack and ship their home movies, photos and other aging media to be restored and preserved digitally.
“When it comes to packing and shipping America’s priceless treasures, there is no one more qualified than The UPS Store,” said Mark Rukavina, founder and CEO of iMemories. “We are excited to provide our customers not only the convenience of using The UPS Store, but also the peace of mind that iMemories will handle their memories with expert care.”
With nearly 4,400 locations, The UPS Store Certified Packing Experts can pack and ship customers’ treasured memories for preservation at iMemories. The UPS Store provides everything needed to pack home movie films, videotapes, photos, slides and other media. As with all UPS shipments, customers can then track the progress of their shipment online.
“The sheer size of the domestic The UPS Store footprint makes it easy for families to drop off old videos and photos,” said Chris Marocchi, who oversees product innovation for The UPS Store network. “Our franchisees will then do what they do best – pack it all up and ship it off to iMemories.”
Once a package is received at iMemories’ U.S.-based production facility, each piece of content is given a unique bar code to provide tracking through the restoration and preservation process. Once the media has been digitized, customers can then sort, select and organize all their memories conveniently online as well as produce personalized archive-grade DVDs.
iMemories has emerged as a leader in this rapidly growing consumer service market, which is being fueled by the volume of home movies and photos that exist in abundance across America’s 118 million households, coupled with the growing realization among families that their images won’t last forever if kept in their original formats.
The environmental conditions of basements, attics and garages can wreak havoc on home movie films, videotapes and photos, which leads to accelerated loss of image quality. iMemories provides a safe and cost-effective service solution for home movie and photo transfers to digital format, giving customers a single online platform to convert, share, edit and store their family images from any decade.

IRVINE, Calif., April 5, 2011 – Entrepreneur magazine is calling upon business owners nationwide to enter the Entrepreneur of 2011 contest presented by The UPS Store ®. The search is on now through June 15 for three category winners challenging the status quo. Entrants must be either an undergraduate or graduate student between the ages of 18 and 25 during the time of submission.
“Each year the competition heats up with entrepreneurs kicking old-business habits to the curb to address new market needs in innovative ways,” says Amy Cosper, vice president and editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur magazine. “We’d expect nothing less from the 7.8 million small businesses brilliantly applying their ideas to everything from sustainability issues to health matters and more. President Visits UPS to Highlight Private Sector Energy Solutions
Landover, April 01, 2011
UPS Becomes Charter Member of National Clean Fleets Partnership
Speaking to a crowd of more than 300 employees and representatives of major American companies at the UPS (NYSE: UPS) facility here, President Barack Obama praised efforts to reduce the environmental impact of corporate trucking fleets, noting the potential of alternative fuel vehicles to lower the nation's dependence on oil and drive savings both from an environmental and business standpoint.
"If you're a business that needs to transport goods, I'm challenging you to replace your old fleet with a clean energy fleet that's not only good for your bottom line, but good for our economy, good for our country and good for our planet," said Obama.
Chairman and CEO Scott Davis welcomed President Obama to UPS, which with its "rolling laboratory" of nearly 2,000 alternative fuel vehicles was chosen to host the event. Pepsi-Frito Lay, Verizon and AT&T also showcased their alternative fuel fleets for the President. Those companies joined UPS and FedEx today in becoming charter members of the National Clean Fleets Partnership.
As members of the partnership, the companies - operators of more than 275,000 vehicles combined- pledged to support the Administration's energy security efforts and to develop new alternative fuel technologies in tandem with the government. The combination of private sector innovation with public sector support is seen as a way to drive efforts to lower America's dependence on foreign oil while growing the domestic economy and contributing a significant cost-savings to companies.
"Making the transition to a clean energy economy will help us... in two very important ways," Obama added. "First, it reduces the chance that our families, our businesses and our economy will be held hostage to the whims of the oil market. Second, investments in clean energy have the potential to create an untold number of new jobs and new industries right here in the United States."
During today's event, UPS Chief Sustainability Officer Scott Wicker guided President Obama, Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on a tour of UPS vehicles, including plug-in all-electric and compressed natural gas trucks. Those technologies make up only a fraction of an alternative fuel fleet that includes hydraulic hybrid, electric hybrid, propane and liquefied natural gas for heavy trucks.
"Though many hurdles still remain and the path to success will not be easy, the sustainable business benefits of alternative fuels cannot be under-emphasized," said Davis. "We must deal with the short-term problems of cost differentials and infrastructure to prepare for our long-term future."
UPS's alternative fuel fleet recently hit a milestone of 200 million miles traveled since 2000 and for the first time, there now are alternative fuel and technology choices for virtually all forms of trucks on the ground. As Wicker noted to President Obama during their tour, there is no one-size-fits-all solution currently available for every situation. Investment in a broad spectrum of choices is vital to ensuring long-term program viability and to making real reductions in foreign petroleum consumption.
Obama's focus on private-public interaction may bode well for companies that approach energy security and sustainability campaigns as a natural part of business planning. Though technologies like liquefied natural gas can help to conquer even the most demanding conditions at a significant cost-savings, government incentives are still important to offset the initial high cost of vehicle and infrastructure investment. Economies of scale will develop over time as demand increases, making it a win-win situation for all parties involved.
On Wednesday, Obama urged Congress and members of the American business community to embrace a series of long-term energy security goals. Obama's strategy is closely aligned with many initiatives already underway at UPS and if achieved, would result in more alternative fuel vehicles on the road as well as additional fuel-efficiency standards.
From the introduction of its first electric vehicles in 1935 to the establishment of the industry's first sustainability report in 2003, UPS has consistently paved a path of innovation and growth potential in the environmental arena. The company pursues a balance of economic prosperity, social responsibility and environmental stewardship. This integrated approach guides the company as it develops strategy, sets goals, measures performance and takes action.

The finalists are: Sarah Helfer and Pat Thompson, Duke University; Leslie Johnson, Elon University; Adam Gierlach, Rice University, and Adam Satz, Seton Hall University.

"We often hear about the coaches and the star players but rarely do we hear about the team managers," said Michelle Van Slyke, who oversees marketing for The UPS Store network. "These team managers all have a tale to tell and we are happy to help them tell it. Logistics brings everything together. Adam G., Leslie, Sarah, Pat and Adam S. are the glue that holds their respective basketball team together."

Safely Packing Batteries Is Critical
Service Update
It is important to be aware of proper shipping processes when shipping batteries, as improperly packaged batteries can short-circuit, overheat, and catch fire while in transportation.
If you ship packages containing batteries, whether by ground or air, it is your responsibility to make sure they are packaged correctly and ensure they comply with all applicable regulations.
There are many types of batteries, including lithium (e.g. computer and cell phone batteries); dry cell (e.g. AA, C, D batteries); and lead-acid (e.g. for cars or wheelchairs). Each type has varying levels of regulatory requirements and packaging needs, and several types must be documented as hazardous materials when shipped.
Please assess your current shipping operation to make sure you are following safe battery packing procedures.
To help reduce the risk of battery-related incidents, follow these guidelines for preparing a package containing batteries:
* For loose batteries, cover the battery terminals (or leads) with an insulating cap or electrical tape, if the battery is not already contained in protective packaging.
* Ensure there is adequate internal protection to keep batteries from contacting metal or other batteries by wrapping them individually, either with bubble sheeting or plastic bags.
* Do not ship damaged, defective, or recalled batteries by air, as such shipments are prohibited by federal regulation. Also, UPS does not accept air shipments of recycled batteries.
* For battery-operated tools, laptops, or other appliances, provide effective protection for the switches to make sure they will not turn on accidentally during transportation.
* Lead-acid batteries contain highly corrosive liquids, making these batteries subject to U.S. and international shipping regulations. UPS hazardous materials restrictions may also apply.
* Package batteries securely to keep them from shifting, being crushed, or otherwise damaged while in transportation.
We appreciate your help in making sure your packages are safe for transport.
