The UPS Store Honors Unsung Heroes of College Basketball
San Diego, March 14, 2011
NCAA Basketball Team Managers Featured in Social Video Contest
The UPS Store® today tipped off its Print Madness promotion in celebration of NCAA® March Madness®, featuring Facebook-hosted video contest recognizing the unsung logistics heroes of college basketball as well as a month-long special on color copies.
Taking center court of Print Madness are the unsung heroes of the NCAA - the team managers who handle the logistics of making their teams great. The UPS Store is paying tribute to the young men and women in its "Masters of Logistics" team manager contest.
Through April 15, the videos of five managers representing four universities will be posted on The UPS Store Corp Facebook page. The public can vote for their favorite team manager story by "liking" the video on Facebook. The school represented in the video that receives the most "likes" will receive a $10,000 scholarship in the team manager's name to the university's general scholarship fund.
The finalists are: Sarah Helfer and Pat Thompson, Duke University; Leslie Johnson, Elon University; Adam Gierlach, Rice University, and Adam Satz, Seton Hall University.
Each of these five students is inspirational in one way or the other, from overcoming obstacles to demonstrating the true essence of teamwork and friendship.
"We often hear about the coaches and the star players but rarely do we hear about the team managers," said Michelle Van Slyke, who oversees marketing for The UPS Store network. "These team managers all have a tale to tell and we are happy to help them tell it. Logistics brings everything together. Adam G., Leslie, Sarah, Pat and Adam S. are the glue that holds their respective basketball team together."
In addition, through April 15, participating The UPS Store locations are offering basketball fans, small-business owners and general consumers four color copies for $1, or just $0.25 each.
"Everyone knows us for our packing and shipping services," said Stuart Mathis, president of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. (MBE), franchisor of The UPS Store. "Print Madness allows our franchisees to showcase their full-service printing and document services capabilities during the excitement of March Madness."
The UPS Storenetwork's professional printing services include: color and black-and white prints; binding; lamination; finishing, and folding. Customers can select from a variety of print products, including presentations, flyers and brochures, business cards, menus and more. In addition, participating locations offer online printing and wide-format printing.

Safely Packing Batteries Is Critical
Service Update
It is important to be aware of proper shipping processes when shipping batteries, as improperly packaged batteries can short-circuit, overheat, and catch fire while in transportation.
If you ship packages containing batteries, whether by ground or air, it is your responsibility to make sure they are packaged correctly and ensure they comply with all applicable regulations.
There are many types of batteries, including lithium (e.g. computer and cell phone batteries); dry cell (e.g. AA, C, D batteries); and lead-acid (e.g. for cars or wheelchairs). Each type has varying levels of regulatory requirements and packaging needs, and several types must be documented as hazardous materials when shipped.
Please assess your current shipping operation to make sure you are following safe battery packing procedures.
To help reduce the risk of battery-related incidents, follow these guidelines for preparing a package containing batteries:
* For loose batteries, cover the battery terminals (or leads) with an insulating cap or electrical tape, if the battery is not already contained in protective packaging.
* Ensure there is adequate internal protection to keep batteries from contacting metal or other batteries by wrapping them individually, either with bubble sheeting or plastic bags.
* Do not ship damaged, defective, or recalled batteries by air, as such shipments are prohibited by federal regulation. Also, UPS does not accept air shipments of recycled batteries.
* For battery-operated tools, laptops, or other appliances, provide effective protection for the switches to make sure they will not turn on accidentally during transportation.
* Lead-acid batteries contain highly corrosive liquids, making these batteries subject to U.S. and international shipping regulations. UPS hazardous materials restrictions may also apply.
* Package batteries securely to keep them from shifting, being crushed, or otherwise damaged while in transportation.
We appreciate your help in making sure your packages are safe for transport.

The UPS Store helps Customers handle
the logistics of the holidays
MANASSAS/MANASSAS PARK, VA December 6, 2010 – This time of year, customers have a ton on their plates, and we don’t mean delicious turkey and stuffing. The experts at Hiram Andrades’ The UPS Store ® located at Signal Hill Shopping Center, 9532 Liberia Avenue, Manassas, VA 20110 or online: www.theupsstorelocal.com/4988 can ease holiday stress by helping with customers’ holiday logistics.
“Customers are busy running from point A to point B making all the necessary preparations for the holidays,” said The UPS Store franchisee Hiram Andrades. “Whether it’s packing and shipping gifts to loved ones, shipping luggage ahead to grandma’s house, opening a mailbox to receive all those online orders, or printing the family’s holiday newsletter, we’re a one-stop shop that can handle many of our customers’ holiday logistics.”
Andrades and his team offer professional packing and shipping of your gifts so they arrive safe and sound. For the die-hard DIYers, [Andrades and his staff offer customers the following tips to pack like a pro:
- Begin with the proper materials, including: a new cardboard box designed for shipping (no gift boxes); professional-grade packaging tape (no cellophane, masking or duct tape); and packaging material like foam peanuts or bubble cushioning (no newspapers or real popcorn).
l Include a label inside the package with both the destination and return addresses.
l Use a shipping option, like UPS , that provides a package-tracking number.
l Take batteries out of toys, electronics, etc. before shipping.
l Ship wrapped gifts ahead to your destination, especially if traveling by air.
“It’s also important to use the right size box,” Andrades said. “You want to leave at least two inches between your gifts and the walls of the box and fill the space with adequate packaging materials.”
“Of course, if you’re in doubt, it’s always good to turn to the professionals. That’s why we’re here,” [insert franchisee last name] said. “Our assistance is particularly important if you’re shipping fragile or unusually shaped items.”
The UPS Store also offers the Pack & Ship Promise, which reimburses customers the cost of packaging materials and service as well as shipping costs in the event a center-packed item shipped via UPS is lost or damaged (subject to the lesser of actual value, replacement or repair cost).] More information is available at www.theupsstorelocal.com/4988.
In addition, with only 20 shipping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, good timing is critical. Mondays are typically the busiest shipping days and Dec. 13-17 is expected to be the busiest week of the year.
“But procrastinators need not fear. You can ship as late as Dec. 23 for delivery on Dec. 24,” Andrades said.
Customers also have an opportunity to help the environment this holiday season.
“Don’t hassle with trying to figure out what to do with all of those pesky packaging peanuts,” Andrades said. “Bring them to us. We accept clean packaging peanuts for reuse.”
The UPS Store carries a full array of shipping supplies. They also can assist with printing holiday newsletters, programs and invitations. You can even have more time to shop by getting a mailbox at The UPS Store , where holiday helpers can accept all of your online and catalog orders from any carrier and notify you via e-mail or text when you have a package waiting.
